The Signature of Flares in VIRGO Total Solar Irradiance Measurements
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) measurements from the VIRGO (Variability of solar IRradiance and Gravity Oscillations) instrument on board SOHO to obtain preliminary estimates of the mean total radiative energy emitted by X-class solar flares. The basic tool is that of summed-epoch analysis, which has also enabled us to detect and partially characterize systematic errors present in the basic data. We describe these errors, which significantly degrade the photometry at high frequencies. We find the ratio of GOES 1-8Å luminosity to total bolometric luminosity to be of order 0.01.

Technical guide to Set Up a Spectral Solar Direct Normal Irradiance Permanent Station: Study Area- Hannover, Germany
The spectral Direct Normal Irradiance (SDNI) is a basic radiometric quantity from which many other quantities can be derived. It provides not only information about the spectral and distribution of the direct solar radiation reaching a particular location. Accurate knowledge about the spectral direct irradiance shall enable us to gain new scientific results in the: determination of cloud effect...
متن کاملTotal solar irradiance satellite composites and their phenomenological effect on climate
Herein I discuss and propose updated satellite composites of the total solar irradiance covering the period 1978-2008. The composites are compiled from measurements made with the three ACRIM experiments. Measurements from the NIMBUS7/ERB and the ERBS/ERBE satellite experiments are used to fill the gap from June 1989 to October 1991 between ACRIM1 and ACRIM2 experiments. The climate implications...
متن کاملModelling irradiance variations from the surface distribution of the solar magnetic field
An important question in solar physics is to what extent solar surface magnetism affects the solar irradiance. Previous attempts to answer this question have employed proxies of the magnetic field to reconstruct the irradiance and compare it with observations. Here we present the first model calculations of solar irradiance variations based on variations of the surface distribution of the solar...
متن کاملSolar Latitudinal Distribution of Solar Flares around the Sun and Their Association with Forbush Decreases during the Period of 1986 to 2003
Solar flare events of high importance were utilised to study solar latitudinal frequency distribution of the solar flares in northern and southern hemisphere for the solar cycle 22 to recent solar cycle 23. A statistical analysis was performed to obtain their relationship with sudden storm commencement (SSCs) and Forbush decrease events (Fd) of cosmic ray intensity. An 11-year cyclic variation ...
متن کاملA model of solar total and spectral irradiance variations
We model solar spectral irradiance variations under the assumption that they are produced by sunspots and faculae alone. The model is based on three components, i.e. quiet Sun, assumed to be temporally invariant, sunspots and faculae whose temporal variations are mimicked using time series of sunspot areas and Mg II core-to-wing ratios. The detailed flux spectrum for each component is employed....
